SOS digital kine transfers are produced using a proprietary-built film recorder. Video images are transferred to a computer hard disk from any digital or analogue format. The images then undergo a colourspace conversion, and a re-size process.
The colourspace conversion is achieved using an in-house proprietary software. The software's advanced algorithms allow the lab to closely match the video data to the characteristics of film. It also allow the lab to rapidly resize the images to film resolution.
Once the images are prepared in this way, the film recording process begins. SOS uses a 3 colour B&W separation process for maximum colour saturation and sharpness. The film recorder takes a seperate exposure of each B&W record by exposing and rewinding, exposing etc.
The film recorder and the data it receives is set up to match aim densities particular to each batch of filmstock that are used. This ensures that the same title transferred again to a new batch of film stock, will project in a comparatively similar way to the first print.
After the negative has been recorded, standard film laboratory procedures are used to produce the first Answer Print. The Answer Print is the first print to marry the image with the final sound from the sound negative.
