CURRICULUM  VITAE

INTRODUCTION:

I am a filmmaker with 30 years experience in a wide range of filmmaking craft skills, specializing in feature-film drama production. My principal expertise is cinematography and lighting design, based on intensive formal training and extensive experience in more than 100 credited productions. In addition, I am a writer/director with a number of short dramas and documentaries in active distribution. I've also taught film, video and television production techniques from grass-roots training in the Third World to advanced professional and university level.

LATE 1960's AND EARLY 1970's:

Earliest films in Standard 8 and Super 8. Many titles, usually conceptual, poetic or surreal in style. Later came a number of longer projects exploring pure cinéma vérité and vérité-style documentaries.

1970

First professional job as a studio assistant for the Australian national television network, the A.B.C. First short films produced in 16mm.

1971

Founded THE BRISBANE FILMMAKERS CO-OPERATIVE to promote independent film production and exhibition. Opened the YELLOW DOOR CINEMA, the only regular exhibitor of independent films in the State of Queensland at the time.

1972

Attended THE LAWSON FILM SCHOOL tutored by national and international filmmakers. Exhibited my first major work, the experimental film, WANK. Worked as a regular cameraman for the now historic CINETONE PRDUCTIONS, in Brisbane.

1973

Shot major documentary, PERFECT STRANGERS, at the now legendary Nimbin Festival. Started shooting another major documentary. Due to the evolving nature of the subject matter, shooting continued for three years.

1974

Organized and tutored in a comprehensive filmmaking workshop with guest director, BRUCE BERESFORD, and cinematographer, DON McALPINE, ASC. Entered the selection programme for the National Film School. Directing a short film, COMPLEX, and compiled a research report for the school. One of 25 selected from over 3000 applicants.

1975

Started 3 years of full-time studies at the AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FILM AND TELEVISION SCHOOL. Produced and directed the documentary, PEOPLE DON'T TALK ABOUT IT.

1976

Specialized in advanced cinematography. Wrote and directed a short drama, TEACH THEM A LESSON, plus several video and television projects (studio based, O.B. [outside broadcast] and field productions).

1977

Studied under internationally renowned cinematographers, DON McALPINE, ASC (Patriot Games, Mrs Doubtfire), RUSSEL BOYD, ACS(Tender Mercies) and BRIAN PROBYN, BSC (Badlands). Was director of photography on student's final year projects. 20 production credits completed in 3 years.

1978

Graduated with a Diploma in Cinematography presented by the Governor General of Australia. Established my own production company, CROWSFOOT FILMS. Completed principal shooting for a new documentary, FRIENDS AND ENEMIES.

1979

Worked as a freelance director of photography on many short dramas by Australia's 'new wave' of young and talented directors. New Crowsfoot productions included, THE LONG MARCH and COSTA NIPPON. Crowsfoot established its own comprehensive lab, editing room and sound mixing suite.

1980

Lectured for three years in film and television production at the UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY in Sydney, while other Crowsfoot and freelance production work continued.

1981

Produced several video productions of large rock concerts in Sydney, including Rock Against Racism. Co-produced, THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING, about Australian Aboriginals, and later "road showed" it to remote areas in northern Australia.

1982

Two documentaries released through Crowsfoot Films, FRIENDS AND ENEMIES and THE BATTLE FOR BOWEN HILLS. The latter was broadcast on Australian national television. Retrospective of my films screened at the CENTRE CINEMA, Brisbane (4 & 5 November, 1982).

1983

A season of Crowsfoot films screened at THE FOOTBRIDGE CINEMA in Sydney. Shot audio-visual production in south-east Asia, focusing on tribal groups in the Philippines.

1984

Organized a 6 month workshop to teach basic filmmaking skills in Malaysia. Travelled to Europe to distribute and exhibit Crowsfoot, and other films, which I shot or co-produced.

1985

Helped with the organization of two International Film Festivals through Kino Eiszeit in Berlin (Australian and Asian co-ordinator).

1986

Returned to Asia to shoot two documentaries in politically repressive and volatile circumstances. One in West Malaysia, and the other in extremely remote areas on the island of Borneo.

1987/9

Worked as a writer developing a number of feature-film screenplays for European producers.

1990 to 1998

Worked in Europe as Director of Photography on 5 feature-length films, and a further 3 as Co-director of Photography (Lighting Director). Worked intensively in other areas, namely, short dramas, film documentaries and television series (details below).

1996

Was the first foreign D.P. to be invited to shoot a feature film in South Korea. Conducted Kodak Workshop in Advanced Cinematography Techniques, in Seoul, Korea.

1997

Moved my production base from Europe to the U.S.A.
